Volunteer with Us

Volunteers are essential for minor hockey programs to run. There are many opportunities to volunteer with SBMHA. All volunteers should have a love of the game and a desire to help others develop their love of the game.

Below you will find information on the different volunteer opportunities that are available with SBMHA:

SBMHA Board Volunteers
The SBMHA Board is made up of volunteers who oversee the planning and operation for the association. Roles range from executive level to members at large.

Our board is also made up of Community Centre Representatives from the different community centres in our catchment area. If you are interested in serving on the board as a representative of your home community centre, please contact your community centre directly for information.

Initiation Program (IP) Skate Volunteers
IP Skates are held for our youngest programs to give players the chance to develop their skating and hockey skills before they are placed on teams for practices and games. These skates require a number of on-ice volunteers to help lead players through various development drills and activities, so volunteers should have good skating ability. Volunteering at IP Skates is also an excellent opportunity for anyone thinking of coaching to get some “hands-on” experience working with the players and other coaches.

To assist with IP Skates, please contact our IP Director.

Coach Volunteers
Head coaches and assistant coaches are required for all SBMHA teams to provide positive leadership and mentorship to their players. Coaches must submit an application form, have (or complete) their required coaching certification(s) necessary for the age group they coach and get their child abuse registry and criminal record checks (costs covered by the association). SBMHA has a Code of Conduct that must be followed by all coaches. For more information about coaching, including the application form, please visit our Coaches Resource page.

Team Volunteers
Once teams are formed, there are a number of volunteer roles that need to be filled within the team, including team manager, team treasurer, safety officer, etc. These roles are necessary for the team. If you are interested in a team volunteer opportunity, please discuss the opportunities with the team head coach.

Special Event Volunteers
SBMHA coordinates a number of events throughout the hockey season, including a Seals Day and different hockey tournaments. All of these events require volunteer organizers and volunteers at the events. If you are interested in event volunteering, please contact us to discuss available upcoming opportunities.
